The Institute of Aeronautical Technology (ITL) is an organizational unit of the Faculty of Mechatronics, Armament and Aeronautics (WML) of the Military University of Technology. The history of The Institute of Aeronautical Technology (ITL) dates back to the creation, with the establishment of the Academy in 1951, of the Department of Aerodynamics and Aircraft Design, later divided into two separate departments: The Department of Aircraft Theory and Design and the Department of Aerodynamics and External Ballistics. Later, after the addition of the Department of Aeronautical Automation and Equipment, the Institute of Aeronautical Technology was established in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at WAT. In 1991, ITL was transferred to what was then the Department of Electromechanics, which was soon renamed the Department of Armament and Aeronautics and later the Department of Mechatronics. From 2012 to 2020, the Department was called the Department of Mechatronics and Aeronautics. Since 2020, the Department has been performing under the current name of the Department of Mechatronics, Armament and Aeronautics. All tasks of the Institute of Aeronautical Technology in the area of teaching, research, organizational and educational activities are mainly concentrated in the area of training of technical personnel in the field of Aviation and Aerospace Studies and the field of Safety Engineering. The institute also teaches a number of core and directional subjects for the Mechatronics major. The aforementioned tasks are currently being carried out at the four Institute Departments:
- Department of Aerodynamics and Thermodynamics
- Department of Avionics
- Department of Aircraft Construction and Operation
- Department of Safety Engineering and Aerospace Armament
and in one stand-alone laboratory:
- Aerospace Propulsion Research Laboratory
Training of engineering and technical personnel for the needs of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Poland, units of the national economy, civilian and military scientific and research units and universities is carried out in full-time and part-time studies of the first and second degree and single master’s degree programs, dedicated to candidates for professional soldiers, in the following specialties profiled strictly by ITL:
- Aircraft and helicopters
- Aircraft drives
- Avionics
- Aerial armament
- Technical safety engineering
- Unmanned systems engineering
In the above-mentioned areas of scientific and research activity, postgraduate studies are conducted under the title Aero Engines. The scientific, teaching and technical staff consists of experienced employees and professional soldiers with the following structure of degrees and titles:
- 8 professors
- 5 research and teaching university professors
- 7 teaching college professors
- 16 PhD engineers
- 13 master engineers
